- Marlin manufactured pistols until 1875, when he began production of Ballard rifles. In 1881, he made his first lever-action repeating rifle for which his company became famous. - Model 39: The model 39 was born in 1922. It was identical to the pistol grip, octagon barrel model 97 version. The 24” octagon barrel was all that was available. The rear of the pistol grip lever had the slight S curve to it where it met the lower tang as did the model 97. Top of the tangs were all marked Marlin /MOD 39.

Model 39
Introduced in 1922. Model 39 was chambered for .22 rimfire, had 24' octagonal barrel and take-down receiver. Has full-length magazine tube which holds 25 Shorts, 20 Longs or 18 LR cartridges. Most Model 39s had a spring-loaded button outer magazine tube release. Very early variations had Model '97 type knurled latch release. As Model 39As were being phased in around 1939, many have more modern removable inner magazine tube. Has solid top frame and side ejection, Rocky Mountain rear and ivory bead front sight. Receiver, lever and hammer are case colored; barrel blued. Pistol-grip stock and steel-capped forearm are varnished walnut. Manufactured in this form between 1922 and 1938, with a number of options that could affect value and would warrant an individual appraisal. Model 39s with a 'star' stamped on tang, were considered high grade guns by factory inspector and will command a premium in better condition examples. NOTE: Model 39s made prior to 1932 that have no prefix or prefix S on serial number, should not be used with high-speed ammunition. Prefix HS indicates an improved bolt that is safe for this ammunition.

Improved version of Model 39. Has a heavier tapered round barrel, semi-beavertail forearm and redesigned pistol-grip stock. Rubber buttplate was replaced by one of a synthetic fiber; otherwise, specifications were similar to Model 39. Manufactured from 1939 to 1960. Several variations are listed.

Introduction of this model marked 100th Anniversary of the Marlin Company. Features 20' octagonal barrel, with semi-buckhorn rear and brass blade front sight. Stock is fancy walnut, with straight-grip, brass fore-end tip and buttplate. A medallion inlaid into right side of receiver. Brass plate on stock. Manufactured 34,197 in 1970. As a commemorative, needs to be as it came from the factory to command collector interest.

Produced because the company had machinery and some left-over barrels from two commemorative models produced in 1970 and 1971. A regular production run that was meant to be used and was not a special issue. Has 24' tapered octagonal barrel. Chambered for .22 rimfire cartridges. Pistol-grip walnut stock, with steel fore-end tip. Manufactured 2,551 in 1972 and 1973. This was not a commercially successful model and discontinued for that reason.

Im still in the market for a 45-70 lever gun.
But Im leery of Marlin lever guns made between 2009 and 2016/17 as I 'heard' they were manufactured in less than perfect conditions.
I 'heard' Remington started manufacturing the 45-70 using Marlin's original prints and the last couple years the guns are much better?
